13 April 2007  Families and friends 'should help elderly claim benefits'
Families and friends of older citizens have been urged to help them claim the benefits to which they are entitled to improve their quality of life, it has been reported.

Age Concern, a leading charity that seeks to promote the well-being of the elderly, reports that 35 per cent of Britons are concerned that an elderly relative or friend is not claiming significant amounts of benefits money.

The group adds that up to £4.2 billion is left unclaimed every year by older people in Britain.

Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern, said: "Millions of older people across the UK are missing out on money that's rightfully theirs and could make a huge difference to their quality of life."

He added that the charity was launching its Your Rights campaign as part of its effort to encourage older citizens to claim more benefits.

Last month, Age Concern and Help the Aged launched a report calling for insurance firms to do more to enable older Britons to purchase travel insurance over 65.
