21 February 2007  FCO advises senior travel insurance for adventurous over-50s
Holidaymakers over the age of 50 should ensure they take out senior travel insurance as their trips are becoming more adventurous, according to a government department.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) says that the over-50s are starting to indulge in more active pursuits while abroad such as swimming with sharks and need to make sure they take out senior travel insurance to avoid hefty medical bills should the unexpected occur.

In addition, the FCO notes that the number of Britons aged over 50 experiencing problems while on holiday is increasing and this is primarily caused by a lack of senior travel insurance and preparation.

"As we have noticed an increasing number of over-50s swapping relaxing holidays in Marbella for treks in the Himalayas, we would like to see more over-50s being better prepared," comments Steve Jewitt-Fleet from the consular communications team at the government department.

Saga recently introduced senior travel insurance to cover a variety of activities, including jet-skiing, surfing and sailing for holidaymakers over 50.
