26 January 2007  Extreme weather 'calls for insurance planning'
Older people can stay warm in winter by preparing their homes for the freezing weather, a bank advises.

Householders should take simple steps such as keeping drains and gutters free from debris in order to ensure their home is not affected by the current cold snap, suggests Lloyds TSB Insurance.

In addition, the home insurance provider recommends that older people should make sure they take action to avoid suffering burst pipes in the freezing temperatures by getting outdoor stand pipes insulated.

"A little bit of effort now could save you a lot of wasted time and stress caused by problems such as burst pipes or broken boilers," asserts Phil Loney, managing director at the company.

He added that homeowners could provide themselves with "peace of mind" for staying warm in winter by ensuring they have adequate home insurance cover.

Lloyds TSB also predicts that the number of people making claims due to burst pipes is likely to rise by 15 per cent over the next three months.

Meanwhile, a report released last month by Abbey revealed that the total cost of building insurance claims to cover storm damage repairs amounts to £324 million every year in the UK.
