11 August 2006  Elderly warned to watch for stingers
Mature holidaymakers heading to Spanish and southern French and Italian coasts are being warned to beware of jellyfish, whether they have adequate senior travel insurance or not.

According to the Daily Express, many beaches across the northern Mediterranean have been closed after an invasion of poisonous jellyfish.

Thousands of holidaymakers, both young and old, many of whom will have chosen to take out senior travel insurance, have already been treated for stings and burns from the creatures known as Mauve Stingers, which are thought to have drifted in from the African coast.

One British holidaymaker, Mark Roberts from Kent, who was stung by the invading jellyfish, said: "It was really painful and made me think twice about going in the water again.

"We spent the rest of our holiday around the hotel pool."

The stings, which can trigger allergic reactions and may lead to serious medical problems, pose the greatest risk to senior holidaymakers, young children and those with heart problems.

Those over 65-years-old are advised to always state any existing conditions they may suffer from, including heart problems, when purchasing their holiday insurance, to avoid invalidating their policy if they are ill.
