06 June 2007  Elderly volunteers join for 'extraordinary study'
Earlier this week, 1,000 elderly volunteers met in Edinburgh to celebrate their participation in a landmark study investigating mental decline in older people.

The Disconnected Mind study is due to be completed in 2015 and seeks to prompt the discovery of improved treatments while showing the benefits of an active lifestyle and good diet to delay the start of the condition.

Professor Ian Deary, leader of this research project at the University of Edinburgh, said: "'Understanding the ageing mind is one of the greatest challenges facing 21st century science.

"We are delighted to work in partnership with Help the Aged and thankful for the kind support of our 1,000 participants."

He added that this study is at the centre of the effort to tackle the problems of mental decline.

In February 2007, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office reported that increasing numbers of older Britons are enjoying adventure activities abroad and urged these holidaymakers to purchase senior travel insurance to avoid the expense of potential medical bills.
