08 July 2006  Elderly trek off the beaten track
A group of nine retired French nationals, the eldest of whom was 80-year-old Asia-enthusiast, Claude Fievet, recently ignored the French foreign ministry’s warnings and travelled to Afghanistan for the adventure of a life-time on a journey of "communal discovery".

All of the elderly adventurers had to sign waivers however, which absolved the French government and their travel agent of responsibility for their personal safety, on a trip for which they would have been well-advised to take out comprehensive elderly travel insurance for.

The group travelled to Bamiyan, where the great 1,800-year-old statues of Buddha, which the Taliban blew up in late 2001, once stood, Band-i-Amir with its startlingly deep blue lakes as well as the ancient city of Balkh, once one of the most important cities in Central Asia and home of Alexander the Great.

Simone Thibaudeau, a 73-year-old commented: "A trip to Afghanistan was so tempting that we decided to do it practically without hesitation and we have no regrets."

Commenting on the conditions they experienced on their trip which included sleeping rough Ms Thibaudeau, added however: "For those that are thinking about their comfort, I would tell them not to come to Afghanistan.

"It is not yet ready for tourists, that’s for sure."
