30 September 2006 Elderly travellers have 'major impact' on tourism
In the future increasing numbers of Britons may be purchasing senior travel insurance and heading abroad, as a report by the European Travel Commission (ETC) cites on the ageing population in parts of Europe as a key trend affecting.
The paper, entitled Tourism Trends for Europe, aims to investigate changes in tourism due to both internal and external factors.
Increased life expectancy, trends towards early retirement and increased activity were cited as reasons why the elderly are increasingly going on holiday.
Rob Franklin, executive director of the ETC, said: "One of the most critical developments, for example, is the ageing of the population in key source markets, which has already had - and will continue to have - a major impact on travel and tourism demand."
VisitBritain claimed earlier this year that the domestic tourism industry could work harder to make activities, destinations and accommodation more available to the ten million people in the UK who would require travel insurance over-65 on their holidays.
