Senior citizens in India are increasing taking up senior travel insurance and heading overseas on foreign travel trips, according to figures from various travel companies.

Insurance companies in India are selling increasing amounts of OAP travel insurance as senior travellers now make up 15 per cent of the overseas travel market, the Times of India reports.

According to travel agents Cox and Kings' chief executive officer, Urshila Kerkar, "senior citizens are emerging as a new segment that’s showing a lot of promise", while tour and travel company TCI have seen a 20 per cent increase in the number of senior citizens travelling abroad over the last year.

Increasing numbers of aging travellers are investing senior travel insurance too, as ICICI Lombard General Insurance state, 16 per cent of travel insurance policies in 2005-2006 were bought by elderly travellers.

Sudhir Menon, head of travel insurance at ICICI Lombard, commented: "We’ve seen the segment emerge as a significant growth area, prompting us to look at ways to make the products more attractive, cost effective and accessible."

According to travel site World Worx, senior travellers are respected with many European countries offering travel discounts especially on train passes as well as at tourist sites, museums and attractions.
