07 February 2007  Elderly 'purchasing travel tickets online'
Recently published research has shown a shifting trend in the hobbies of OAPs, with using the internet for tasks such as emailing and buying tickets overtaking do-it-yourself work and gardening as the top pastime for the elderly.

The report by Axa revealed that 41 per cent of elderly Britons find using the internet to be a preferred pastime, compared to 39 per cent citing DIY or gardening and 28 per cent preferring travel.

When online, 84 per cent of OAPs list e-mailing as a popular activity, while 45 per cent use the web to buy travel tickets.

Alison Green at Axa said: "It is encouraging to see British pensioners embracing technology.

"This report highlights how pensioners are using the internet to support a less stressful approach to life in their later years."

Last October, Age Concern reported that more than 14 million Britons over 50 have never used the internet, with the organisation launching an updated version of its How to be a Silver Surfer software to help elderly people get online.
