Elderly 'have appetite for adventure'

Older people today have a lifestyle that contrasts drastically with that experienced by retirees in Britain 50 years ago, it has been claimed, with a sharp increase in the number of holidays and short breaks taken by this age group.

Recently published research from senior travel insurance provider intone reveals that Britons over the age of 50 now take eight or nine trips each year, compared to one or two half a century ago.

Furthermore, the number of trips taken to exotic destinations outside the traditional haunts of Europe or North America has nearly doubled to 1,231,000 each year.

Anne Grahamslaw, managing director of intone, said: "People are much more socially active, travelling further afield and have an appetite for adventure that was not so prevalent among this age group 50 years ago."

Psychologist Martin Lloyd-Elliot attributed this shift in societal trends to a number of economic and psychological factors with influence on the modern age.

Last month, a joint report from Help the Aged and Age Concern called on insurance firms to do more to ensure that older Britons are able to purchase OAP travel insurance before heading abroad.
