15 February 2007  DPTAC: Age equality for elderly travel
The elderly may be among those to benefit from equality laws for the travel industry, it has been claimed.

The Disabled Persons Transport Advisory Committee (DPTAC) has suggested that equality laws which apply to other forms of transport should be extended to include air travel.

This could mean aspects of age equality could be implemented by air travel operators, as the Department for Transport (DfT) states that "older people [frequently] have more than one impairment".

DPTAC chair Neil Betteridge noted that DfT research published last August showed the voluntary Air Access Code had not resulted in fair treatment for disabled people.

"Ministers have stated their preparedness to act if this proved to be the case and it is now time for them to do so," he added.

Mr Betteridge stressed that some areas of weakness identified by the research could be made illegal by extending the Disability Discrimination Act which applies to other types of transport.
