19 July 2007  Cost of living 'still higher for elderly Britons'
Despite a drop in the rate of inflation last month, the rate at which the cost of living is increasing for older Britons still outweighs that for the rest of the country, it has been claimed.

Alliance Trust reports that the official headline rate of inflation fell to 2.4 per cent in June, but that the rate for over-75s has dropped from 3.4 per cent only to 3.1 per cent - a full 29 per cent higher than the rate for other Britons.

Shona Dobbie, head of the Alliance Trust Research Centre, said: "Our four-year study continues to highlight the extent to which the UK's elderly are the group hit hardest by current high levels of inflation."

Ms Dobbie added that homes that spend a larger proportion of their budget on basic goods and services are currently experiencing a higher rate of inflation than published government figures.

Earlier this month, the Motley Fool reported that Britons believe the true rate of inflation to be nearly three times the official headline rate.
