28 August 2007  Compulsory retirement case referred to European court
A case challenging compulsory retirement ages in some professions has been referred to the European Court of Justice, it has been reported.

Leading elderly charity Age Concern reports that the Heyday case has been referred by the High Court to the European Court of Justice.

It is claimed that parts of the new employment age regulations contravene parts of the European Union Directive on Equal Treatment as they can result in Britons over-65 being denied the chance to work.

Ailsa Ogilvie, director of Heyday, said: "The government's decision to allow employers to sack people at 65 completely contradicts its stated aim of encouraging longer working lives."

She added that compulsory retirement ages can result in the forcing out of experienced employees still capable of delivering high standards in the workplace.

Last September, AA Insurance reported that six per cent of older Britons now take adventure holidays, while a tenth would like to learn how to fly a plane.

The firm saluted the continuing activity of these thrill-seekers, though urged them to ensure they are covered by a senior travel insurance policy before heading abroad.
