17 May 2007  Charity 'slams' sham consultations
Age Concern has attacked "tokenistic" consultation procedures involving the elderly in the UK and called for a new approach in this area.

In a paper to be published in Westminster next week, the charity called on public and private organisations to engage in meaningful meetings with older Britons while acknowledging that the heterogeneity in profile for this age group.

Andy Kaye, special projects manager at Age Concern, said: "Older people are fed up being consulted, only to learn the major decisions they're being consulted on have already been taken."

He added that following calls from government for increased consultation, there is no longer an excuse to conduct "research for its own sake" in lieu of consequential discussions.

In March 2007, a joint report from Age Concern and Help the Aged called on the insurance industry to do more for those looking for travel insurance over 65, reporting that many older Britons feel ill-served and excluded by the industry.
