11 July 2007  Charity launches Take Control campaign against fuel poverty
Charity for the elderly Age Concern has launched its Take Control campaign aiming to help older Britons overcome fuel poverty and be in charge of insulating and heating their homes.

As part of a partnership with the Home Heat Helpline, the charity is seeking to influence older citizens and their family and friend to help elderly Britons ensure their homes are energy efficient as possible.

The campaign also aims to make sure that older Britons are receiving any financial support they are entitled to in order to be able to properly heat their home.

Gordon Lishman, director general of Age Concern England, said: "Fuel poverty remains a serious problem.

"The Take Control Test will help to identify people who could benefit most from becoming more energy efficient and hopefully help them keep their homes warm and get best value for money on their fuel bills."

He added that 2.5 million homes in Briton are affected by fuel poverty, a figure twice that seen in 2004.

In March 2007, the National Consumer Council called for "urgent action" in order to help millions of Britons escape fuel poverty.
