08 June 2007  Carers 'could be missing out on cash'
Britons who take care of their elderly partner often will not consider themselves carers - which could result in them not applying for benefits they are entitled to as a result of their work.

Research from Age Concern reveals that 38 per cent of carers look after their parents, while 18 per cent look after their partner, with over a quarter of UK-residents over the age of 50 not realising they could be eligible for benefits when caring for an elderly partner.

Gordon Lishman, director general of the elderly charity, said: "Thousands of carers across the UK are each missing out on cash benefits of up to £2,500 a year, often because they don't realise they are entitled to the extra help or just don't understand the system."

He added that the cost of caring for loved ones can be high and urged carers to get in touch with the charity to gain further information of the funding to which they may be entitled.

In April 2007, Help the Aged reported that one in five Britons will require long term care at some point in their lives, while stating that the existing care system cannot accommodate future retirees.
