29 July 2006 Brits failing to cover against theft
Holidaymakers of all ages, including those who require travel insurance over 65, have had more than £2.7 billion worth of personal possessions stolen while abroad, over the last five years, a new survey has revealed.
The figures from Halifax home insurance also show that more than half of those belongings could not be claimed for, around £1.5 billion worth of items, as the victims had either failed to take out adequate travel insurance or had not bothered with any insurance at all.
The number one place for thefts to occur while abroad, according to Halifax, is in the hotel, followed by the street or at the beach or around the swimming pool.
Paul Birkhead of Halifax travel insurance stated: "Prevention is better than cure - holidaymakers should always use a safe where there is one available and take care not to flash their cash or jewellery.
"Vast amounts of time, money and heartache can be saved by remembering to take simple safety steps."
Southern Europe is the most common place for holiday thefts to take place, according to Halifax travel insurance, followed by western and eastern European countries, while robberies in Africa and Asia account for six or seven per cent of claims.
Recent research showed that over-55s are increasingly choosing long-haul trips over travel closer to home and cruises.
