15 September 2006  Brits expect holidays in retirement
British workers expect to be able to take regular trips abroad when they are old enough for OAP travel insurance, a new survey shows.

The report by insurance provider AXA claims that 74 per cent of Britons plan to take at least one holiday a year when they retire and 71 per cent expect to take weekend breaks and day trips.

However, the company has warned that people may be unable to fulfil their wishes if they are living on the basic state pension in retirement.

Colin Nelson, a spokesman for AXA, said: "The results from our Living on a State Pension experiment highlight some worrying trends.

"The fact that we struggle to survive on this small amount is not surprising in itself but it is peoples' attitudes towards funding their retirement that concerns us most."

Mr Nelson commented that if retirees are to enjoy the "care-free time" that many expect, such as spending their pension on senior travel insurance and regular day trips, they will have to better plan for this expense during their working life.

A study by financial services group Friends Provident in March this year found that an increasing number of elderly Britons are choosing to stay in work longer to enjoy the additional income that it brings.
