23 February 2007  Ageism 'most common form of discrimination'
Recently published statistics have revealed that ageism is the most commonly experienced form of discrimination in the UK.

According to the study from Age Concern, 23 per cent of all people have experienced some form of ageism, compared to 7.5 per cent who have experienced sexism and seven per cent who have been victims of racism.

The charity has called for older citizens to share information regarding their experiences of ageism in advance of forthcoming papers from the government on equality and discrimination law.

Gordon Lishman, director general of age concern, said: "Society too often turns a blind eye to ageism, but our research shows it is actually the most common form of discrimination."

He added that as a result of ageism, older people can experience poorer services or be denied access to goods others take for granted.

Last September, financial services comparison firm moneysupermarket.com revealed that those purchasing travel insurance over 65 could see the cost of cover double with some insurers.
