11 April 2006 Age is no limit for modern travellers
New figures released by Bradford & Bingley show that increasing numbers of people aged over 65 are choosing to travel internationally and requiring special OAP travel insurance.
The report shows that 2.8 million retirees are heading off overseas for increasingly diverse travel experiences and demanding relevant senior travel insurance.
Head of general insurance at Bradford & Bingley, Dave Foyle, said: "The two age groups to show the steepest increase in international travel since 1993 are 55-64 year olds with a huge 140 per cent increase, and over 65s with 110 per cent increase.
"The main reasons for this trend are that we are enjoying better health for longer, and this generation has more money to spend in retirement," he added.
However, mature holidaymakers can find it difficult to find adequate travel insurance cover.
In response to this increasingly active aging population Bradford & Bingley have now extended their insurance upper age limits, from 79 to 85 and 74 to 79 respectively.
Help the Aged is another provider of travel insurance for over 65s, offering cover with no maximum age limit.
