11 July 2006 Age gap increases for travellers taking time out
More than a third of all gap year travellers are aged over 55-years-old, according to a new survey by American Express travel insurance, many of whom will require travel insurance over 65.
The figures, which reflect the number of extended travel insurance policies sold, show that nine out of ten of respondents to the gap year survey were over 30, a number of which would be advised to take out elderly travel insurance policies.
Of the 10,000 American Express travel insurance customers questioned wanted or were planning to take a gap year, with the top destinations being the USA followed by New Zealand and South America.
Marketing manger at American Express travel insurance, Joanne Field, said: "Whilst the over 25's taking a gap break are unlikely to be on such tight budgets as younger travellers, it can still be tempting to try and skimp on insurance.
"Not all policies are the same and it really pays to do your homework and carefully consider the level of cover in relation to your plans."
The company recommends that gap year travellers check that their travel insurance covers them for all of the countries which they are planning to visit.
