If the people won't go to the islands, the islands must go to the people… that appears to be the thinking behind the new tourism boosting strategy of three small isles off the coast of Denmark.
The Danish islands of Laeso, Samso and AEro have come together in partnership and launched a proactive strategy to bring more visitors to their shores, the Nordic council website, Norden reports, including those with multi-trip travel insurance.
In an attempt to attract more traditional visitors, or perhaps those taking out senior travel insurance, representatives of islands will set sail aboard the Margrete Laeso ferry between March 30th and April 2nd taking samples of the islands' culture to Norway's capital, Oslo and the Swedish city of Gothenburg.
Giving prospective visitors the opportunity to see the workings of a traditional salt works, a workshop from Laeso will be set up on the quayside and Danish pastries will be supplied by the Onsbjerg bakery from Samso.
Visitors onboard the Margarete Laeso will also be able to sample specialities from each of the islands, which include vegetables from Samso and soap from AEro as part of the free, public exhibition.
This initiative follows a major joint survey by the three islands conducted in 2004 which revealed holidaymakers who visit the islands remain very loyal with a 90 per cent probability of them returning within five years, according to Norden.
